About this youtube thumbnail downloader
Every YouTube video has a set of thumbnail images stored on YouTube’s image servers. This tool reads the video ID from the link you paste and shows each size that exists, so you can save the one you need for a blog post, a presentation, a reaction video plan or your own channel archive.
How to use the YouTube Thumbnail Downloader
- Copy the link of a YouTube video, Short or live stream (from the Share button or the address bar).
- Paste it into the box above and press Get thumbnails.
- Pick a size: HD 1280×720 (maxresdefault) is the sharpest; SD, HQ and MQ are smaller fallbacks.
- Click ⬇ Download to save the JPG straight to your device (or Open to view it full size).
Features
- One-click Download button that saves the JPG directly — no right-click needed.
- Works with watch links, youtu.be short links, Shorts, embed and live URLs, or a bare 11-character video ID.
- Shows only the sizes that actually exist, so you never download a grey placeholder.
- Nothing to install and no account; the page simply loads the public image from i.ytimg.com.
- Fast on mobile data because no video is ever downloaded, only the image.
Frequently asked questions
Why is there no HD (maxresdefault) thumbnail for some videos?
YouTube only creates the 1280×720 version when the uploader provides a high-resolution custom thumbnail or the video itself is HD. Older or low-resolution uploads may only have SD (640×480) or HQ (480×360) images, and the tool hides sizes that do not exist.
Can I download thumbnails from YouTube Shorts?
Yes. Paste the Shorts link (youtube.com/shorts/…) and the tool extracts the video ID the same way. Note that Shorts thumbnails are stored in landscape sizes, so the vertical frame may appear with side bars.
Is it legal to use a downloaded thumbnail?
Thumbnails are copyrighted by the creator. Saving one for reference, commentary or your own videos is generally fine, but republishing someone else’s thumbnail as your own artwork is not. Ask the creator when in doubt.
Does this tool download YouTube videos?
No. ToolBox only fetches the public thumbnail image. Downloading videos breaks YouTube’s Terms of Service, so we don’t offer it.
What size should my own YouTube thumbnail be?
YouTube now recommends 3840×2160 (16:9, minimum 640 px wide). Uploads can be up to 50 MB from a computer or 2 MB from the mobile app. You can design one with our Thumbnail Text Maker.
