About this background remover
This background remover uses the open-source IMG.LY background-removal model running on ONNX Runtime directly in your browser. Unlike most remove-bg sites, your photo is processed on your own device, so there is no upload queue, no credits and no watermark.
How to use the Background Remover
- Drop or choose a photo with a clear subject: a person, product, animal or object.
- Pick a quality level; Balanced works well for most photos.
- Press Remove background. The model downloads once, then processing takes a few seconds.
- Drag the slider to compare, then download the transparent PNG โ or pick Color, Blurred original or Your image to replace the background and download PNG or JPG.
Features
- Replace the background: solid color (white, passport blueโฆ), a blurred version of the original photo (portrait effect) or any image you upload.
- Before/after slider to inspect edges around hair and fingers.
- On-device AI: private by design and works for sensitive photos like ID pictures.
- Transparent PNG output at the original resolution.
- Solid color background option for passport-style photos and e-commerce listings.
- Model is cached after the first use, so later cut-outs are much quicker.
Frequently asked questions
Is this background remover really free?
Yes, completely free with no credits, limits or watermark, because the work is done by your device rather than a paid server.
Why is the first run slow?
The AI model (40โ170 MB depending on quality) has to download once. Your browser caches it, so later runs only take the processing time.
What photos work best?
Photos where the subject is clearly separated from the background, in good light. Fine hair, glass and very busy backgrounds are harder; try the Best quality setting for those.
Can I make a white background passport photo?
Yes. After removing the background, keep the color picker on white and click Download with color. Then crop to the required size with our Image Cropper.
Does it work on mobile?
On recent phones, yes, especially with the Fast setting. Older phones with little memory may struggle with large photos; resize them first with the Image Compressor.
